On May 3, 2026, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad officially reopens with new magic, and there’s plenty to look forward to when the trains take off once again in search of adventure.
There’s Gold in That There MountainThe story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad dates back to Olden Times—or rather, Golden Times—during the early days of America’s first major gold rush. When Barnabas T. Bullion struck gold in the Big Thunder region, he saw a future full of riches and rushed to start the Big Thunder Mountain Company.
But those shiny dreams came at a cost. Bullion soon found himself battling the forces of nature, and trouble followed close behind. Strange and unexplainable things began happening—machines failed, and cave-ins shut the mines down.
No matter how deep the miners dug, the mountain pushed back. And when the attraction reopens, the unsuspectin’ passengers aboard those runaway trains will discover just how wild the wilderness can get.

Big Thunder Mountain at Walt Disney World has been undergoing a top-to-bottom refurbishment, from the mountain peaks to the deepest caverns, ensuring this classic stays in tip-top shape for years to come.
Wildest Ride in the WildernessA major part of the refurbishment includes a brand-new track and refreshed passenger trains. These updates preserve the attraction’s classic story and signature hootin’ and hollerin’ energy, while adding new movement, detail, and life to the experience.
With all enhancements complete and a full safety review, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen with a lowered height requirement of 38”. Climb aboard, lil prospectors!

One standout moment comes as the trains race underground into breathtaking natural caverns filled with glowing, phosphorescent pools. These illuminate shimmering stalagmites (rising from the ground) and stalactites (hanging from above), creating a stunning scene deep within the mountain.
But the Rainbow Caverns aren’t as friendly as they first appear… that ominous rumble from within may be a warning that something deeper—and wilder—lies ahead.
